How to Improve Safety at Home
Your home should be a safe place for you and your family. Here are some easy ways to help keep everyone safe:
In the Bathroom
- Turn on cold water first, then hot, to stop burns.
- Don’t use hairdryers or other electric things near water.
In the Kitchen
- Use the back rings on the hob and turn pan handles away from the front.
- Keep sharp knives and electric cords out of reach of children.
In the Hall and Stairs
- Keep the floor and stairs clear so no one trips.
- Use stair gates for little children.
- Put a smoke alarm in the hallway.
In the Bedroom
- Never smoke in bed.
- Use locks or safety catches on upstairs windows.
In the Living Room
- Use a fire guard to stop sparks from fires.
- Don’t overload plugs or leave wires across the floor.
In the Garden or Doing DIY
- Wear strong shoes and long trousers.
- Keep sheds locked.
- Use a circuit breaker with electric tools.
Emergency Numbers
Keep a list of important phone numbers near each phone. Write them big so you can read them quickly if you're scared or in a rush.
That includes:
- Police, Fire, and Ambulance (999 or local numbers)
- A family member or friend
- Your doctor
