Safety in the Home

It is important to find out about the steps you can take to improve safety in the home, particularly if you are an older person, a carer or look after a baby or small child.  This list of potential hazards can seem endless, but most can be avoided by taking simple precautions.  To avoid trips, slips and falls ensure halls and stairways are well lit and free from clutter, use non-slip mats in the shower or bath, and clean up spills straight away.  Reduce the risk of becoming the victim of a bogus caller by putting the chain on before you answer the door and asking for ID - don't be shy to do this, genuine callers will not mind you asking.  Fit a smoke alarm and test it regularly.  Substances like powerful cleaning fluids, and pills and medications should be stored away securely.
