Home Safety Tips for Older Adults
Staying safe at home is very important. Here are some simple tips to help older adults around the house.
Bedroom

Keep a lamp or night light near the bed.

Make sure the path to the bathroom is clear.

Use a bed rail if getting in and out of bed is hard.

Keep a phone or emergency button close by.
Bathroom

Use non-slip mats in the shower and on the floor.

Install grab bars near the toilet and in the shower.

Set the water heater to a safe temperature to avoid burns.

Keep toiletries within easy reach to avoid stretching or bending.
Kitchen

Store heavy items on lower shelves.

Use a kettle with an automatic shut-off.

Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it.

Turn pot handles inward when cooking to avoid spills.
Living Room

Keep walkways clear of wires, rugs, and clutter.

Use chairs with arms to help with sitting and standing.
