Home Safety Tips for Older Adults

Staying safe at home is very important. Here are some simple tips to help older adults around the house.

Bedroom

  • Keep a lamp or night light near the bed.

  • Make sure the path to the bathroom is clear.

  • Use a bed rail if getting in and out of bed is hard.

  • Keep a phone or emergency button close by.

Bathroom

  • Use non-slip mats in the shower and on the floor.

  • Install grab bars near the toilet and in the shower.

  • Set the water heater to a safe temperature to avoid burns.

  • Keep toiletries within easy reach to avoid stretching or bending.

Kitchen

  • Store heavy items on lower shelves.

  • Use a kettle with an automatic shut-off.

  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it.

  • Turn pot handles inward when cooking to avoid spills.

Living Room

  • Keep walkways clear of wires, rugs, and clutter.

  • Use chairs with arms to help with sitting and standing.

  • Make sure the room is well-lit.

  • Secure loose rugs with tape or non-slip backing.

Hallways and Stairs

  • Install handrails on both sides of stairs.

  • Use bright lights and night lights in hallways.

  • Keep stairs free of objects.

  • Mark the edges of steps with bright tape if needed.

Front Door and Entryway

  • Use a peephole or door camera to see who’s outside.

  • Keep the area well-lit.

  • Use a non-slip mat outside the door.

  • Lock doors and windows when home or away.
