Heart Disease

Heart disease is a serious illness. It affects the heart and blood vessels. It is the biggest cause of death in the UK. One in four men and one in six women die from it.

What Is Coronary Heart Disease?

Coronary heart disease happens when fatty stuff builds up in the blood vessels around your heart. These vessels are called coronary arteries.

When they get blocked:

  • Blood can't reach your heart properly.

  • You might feel chest pain (called angina).

  • If a vessel gets fully blocked, it can cause a heart attack.

How Can You Prevent It?

You can lower your risk by:

  • Eating healthy food

  • Moving your body more

  • Stopping smoking

  • Keeping a healthy weight

  • Talking to your doctor or health trainer
