Cognitive-behavioural therapy is a relatively short-term, focused psychotherapy for a wide range of psychological problems, including depression and anxiety. The focus of therapy is on how you are thinking (your “cognitions”), behaving, and communicating today, rather than on your early childhood experiences. You and your therapist will work together to develop a plan of therapy. This might include how often you need to come; the relevance of medication; your diagnosis; your goals; skill acquisition; needed changes in the way you think and communicate; and other factors. Some other forms of therapy are unstructured, but in cognitive-behavioural therapy you and your therapist will set an agenda for each meeting. The agenda might include a review of your experience in the previous session, your homework, one or two current problems, a review of what you’ve accomplished in this session, and homework for the next week. If you went to a personal trainer at a health club, you would expect to get guidance on how to exercise when the trainer is not there. The same thing is true in cognitive-behavioural therapy.
Counselling can help you gain a clearer understanding of your emotions which in turn can help you better deal with things in the present whatever has happened in the past. It can help you see things more clearly or from a different point of view that can enable you to focus on feelings, behaviour and experiences and reduce confusion allowing you to make effective decisions leading to positive changes in behaviour and attitude with a goal of facilitating positive change.
It offers a safe place for you to be yourself and to say what you truly feel without being judged, criticised or given unwanted advice.
Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners
PWP’s offer support for individuals experiencing mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety and depression. This is done using practical, CBT based interventions and coping strategies with the focus being the here and now. Interventions include increasing activity & planning, challenging thoughts and supporting individuals to re-engage in anxiety provoking situations with support with sleep. PWP’s equip people with the tools they need to manage symptoms and therefore for the sessions to be most successful practice of applying these between sessions is required.
Educational Group Work
The group sessions are run by PWP’s and therefore covers the interventions above delivered in an educational way in a small group. This can be beneficial as it allows an opportunity to engage in a social environment in a safe place which can help build confidence. It can also offer the opportunity to share similar experiences with group members. The groups run once a week for a period of 4 weeks and information sheets are provided at each session for the client to implement the interventions discussed.
