If you travel by train - or are put off by the cost - you may be interested in getting a Railcard.
There are different types of Railcard for different types of traveller. You make a one-off annual payment for your Railcard, which then entitles you to a third off most adult train fares. Some railcards get you 60% off a child's fare, or a third off a friend's fare, too.
Types of Railcard
There are five different types of Railcard. You can apply online (as long as you can upload a photo of yourself) or at a local train station.
- The 16-25 Railcard is for people aged between 16 and 25 years old, or for anyone in full-time education. This Railcard gets you a third off train fares, as well as discounts at hotels and attractions. It costs £30 for one year or £70 for three years. The three-year railcard is only available if you apply online.
- The Disabled Persons Railcard is for people who have a disability which can make train travel difficult. This Railcard gets you one third off your train fares. If you travel with another adult, they will get a third off their fare, too! You will also be entitled to special offers and discounts on other products and services. The Disabled Persons Railcard costs £20 for one year, or £54 for three years. When applying for your Disabled Persons Railcard, you must be able to prove that you are eligible. Visit the Disabled Persons Railcard website for more information.
- The Family and Friends Railcard is for any adult travelling with at least one child aged 5-15 years. The Railcard gets you one third off adult fares and 60% off children's fares. One Family and Friends Railcard covers up to 4 adults and 4 children - and they don't have to be related! The Railcard also gets you discounts on hotels and days out.
