Volunteer Ship Visitor
Job Provider
Stella Maris
Job Provider Description
Stella Maris is an International Maritime charity supporting seafarers, fishers, and their families in the UK and around the world. It is the official maritime charity of the Catholic Church.
Job summary
Life at sea can be difficult. Seafarers often work away from their families for up to a year at a time. They can feel isolated and suffer from loneliness and exploitation. Stella Maris is a friend in port to seafarers and fishers who want someone to talk to, or who need practical or spiritual help.
Volunteers are vital to the work of Stella Maris.
Our ship visitors go onboard vessels in teams of two to visit seafarers, approaching them as friends, listening to their concerns and where possible offering practical help. For example, our volunteers provide news and information, transport to Seafarers Centres or to the local shops and, if requested, can arrange for Mass or other services to be held onboard.
There are no specific requirements to be a ship visitor, you just need to be a good listener and have a desire to help. You will also need a full driving licence.
Applicants will be invited to come along for a taster session before completing a volunteering form, a Health questionnaire, and a DBS check.
Full training and support will be provided.
