Independent Travel Training

This is a scheme to assist people in being able to travel more independently.

Independent travel training is about supporting the individual to make a journey between two places on their own safely. This journey could be as simple as walking from around the corner or as complicated as using two buses combined with walking between the connections and walking to and from the stops.

A training programme tailored to the individual needs is provided covering road safety, personal safety and transport training as required.

The benefits of independent travel are:

  • More street-wise
  • Improved fitness/lifestyle
  • Develop social skills
  • Become a safer pedestrian
  • Improved self-esteem
  • Increase in confidence
  • Help with decision making
  • Solving problems
  • Access to outside activities
  • Help by preparing individuals for further education and/or employment

Great care is taken to communicate with all parties involved especially families and carers. This will ensure that everyone understands what is happening and is committed to the success of the travel training programme.
