Improve Safety

Your home should be a place where you and your family should feel and be safe at all times. There are many things you can do to make sure you are safe in your home. It is important to keep safe by making sure you follow the tips below:

Improve safety:

In the bathroom:

  • Run cold water before hot when bathing.
  • Don't have hairdryers in the bathroom - water and electricity don't mix!

In the kitchen:

  • Use back burners on cookers and turn pan handles towards the rear.
  • Keep sharp knives out of children's reach.
  • Keep flexes short and out of children's reach.

In the hall and on the stairs:

  • Keep the floor and stairway clear.
  • Fit stair gates for young children.
  • Fit a smoke detector in the hallway.

In the bedroom:

  • Never smoke in bed.
  • Fit window safety catches or locks to upstairs windows.

In the living Room:

  • Use a fixed fire guard.
  • Have enough electrical points, don't overload or trail flexes across the floor.

In the garden and DIY:

  • Wear strong footwear and long trousers when working outside.
  • Keep sheds locked.
  • Always use a circuit breaker on electrical equipment.

In the UK each year, just as many people die from accidents in the home, as they are killed on the road. A further three million are injured in the home and treated in hospital.

Anticipation is the best accident prevention.

You can reduce the accident risk in your home by taking simple precautions.

Keeping yourself and your family safe is mostly to do with thinking ahead. Spot the danger, take precautions and avoid the pain, upset and recriminations of an accident.

Keep Emergency Numbers Handy:

Always keep a list of emergency numbers by each phone and write them big enough that you could read it easily if you were in a hurry or frightened. Be sure to list numbers for:

  • Local Emergency Services, such as Police, Fire Services and Ambulance services (if other than 999);
  • Family member or friend to call in case of emergency; and
  • Your Doctor’s office.
