Dentists

Everyone is entitled to routine dental care and treatment under the NHS. However, some dental practices are not taking on new patients, and some only see private patients, so if you are not already registered with an NHS dentist, you may experience difficulty finding one.

To find your nearest practice call NHS Direct on 0845 4647.  Most dentists recommend you have a check-up every six month.

Free dental treatment

Some people are entitled to free dental treatment.  You will not be charged for treatment if you are:

  • on certain benefits
  • pregnant, or a new mum
  • a full-time student aged 18
  • a child aged under 18 years

Families with a low income may qualify for help with their health costs.

If you are not sure whether you are entitled to free NHS dental treatment, call Patient Services at the Prescription Pricing Authority on 0845 850 1166.

Charges for dental treatment

If you do not qualify for free treatment, you will pay one of three prices, depending on which 'band' your treatment is in (prices correct in April 2015).

Band 1 - £18.80

Band 1 covers an examination, diagnosis and advice.  If necessary, it also includes X-rays, a scale and polish and planning for further treatment.

Band 2 - £51.30

This covers all treatment covered by Band 1, plus additional treatment, such as fillings, root canal treatment and removing teeth (extractions).

Band 3 - £222.50

This covers all treatment covered by Bands 1 and 2, plus more complex procedures such as crowns, dentures and bridges.
