Hart Primary School
Pupils from years 3, 4, 5 & 6 at Hart Primary School became dementia friends on 2nd February 2016. They had some great ideas about ways of being dementia friendly, suggesting actions such as playing their games with people in their family who had dementia, and telling their family what they had learned. A dementia friends session is planned with staff and parents later in the year.
Pupil's from years 3, 4, 5 & 6 at St Peter's Elwick School became dementia friends on 4th February 2016. They had some great ideas about ways of being dementia friendly, suggesting actions such as talking about the past with people in their family who had dementia and wearing their badge with pride. A dementia friends session is planned with staff and parents later in the year.

Brougham Primary School Fourty-four members of staff and governors at Brougham Primary School became dementia friends on 3rd February 2016. Staff are considering ways of raising awareness within the school community.

Manor Community Academy Manor Community Academy supported two groups of health and social care students to become dementia friends. A number of pupils attended a 'level up lunch' about careers within the NHS and joint work is being planned to link some pupils with a local care home that supports people living with dementia. As part of the programme to raise aspirations at Manor Community Academy, monthly lunchtime sessions take place during which students hear from a speaker from the world of work or further/higher education. September 2018 update for Children, Young People and Students on behalf of the Dementia Friendly Hartlepool Steering Group
Work being reported on: This is an update on Children, Young People and Students in Hartlepool schools: (30 primary schools, 5 secondary, 2 special needs, 2 colleges). The group has broadened the focus to work with all young people where opportunities arise. The last meeting was on 19.9.18 and the next meeting will be scheduled before the December steering group on 18.12.18. A Dementia Champion induction took place in Hartlepool in August 2018, attended by 19 people. A support group has now been set up and the 1st meeting took place on 19.9.18. 4 champions attended. Further sessions will be set up and a list of local dementia champions is being developed. From this we will explore who may be interested in working with young people to grow our capacity to do this work.

Summary of work undertaken with existing DFH organisations since the last steering group meeting:
Primary schools The Hartlepool Borough Council Sports and Physical Activity team have visited Head Teachers and 9 schools expressed an interest in the Discovering Dementia through Play sessions (Brougham, St Aidans, Rossmere, Grange, Fens, Kingsley, Greatham , Eskdale and West View). Further discussions have taken place with a range of additional primary schools, although the team is currently working on capacity to accommodate this. Secondary schools English Martyrs were approved by Dementia Friendly Hartlepool in July 2018. They have promoted World Alzheimer's day via their interactive boards, noticeboards and tutors within school and it was discussed in assembly with Y12 & Y13 (190 students). Dementia Friend twitter feeds have been shared. Awareness work is also being carried out with High Tunstall. Colleges Hartlepool College health & beauty students & health and social care students were offered work experience opportunities & Dementia Friends sessions before the summer break. A date for the new intake is currently being arranged. Pre school Local libraries hold lots of resources to raise awareness with young children and hold story sessions throughout the year to help young children understand about dementia when opportunities arise, particularly in Dementia Awareness Week.
Other Opportunities The Sports and Physical Activity team have supported the Dementia Friendly Hartlepool family events by delivering “Discovering dementia through play” and physical activity. They have also delivered sessions for Young Inspectors. When capacity increases, the team are hoping to offer session to Youth Teams, and Sports Clubs. Dementia Friendly Hartlepool organisations have also made pledges to promote dementia awareness with young people. These include:
