Description of Service
Alice House Hospice exists to ensure people affected by a life-limiting illness or the death of a loved one have the care, comfort and support they need. As the only adult Hospice in the Hartlepool and East Durham areas of the UK, our unique range of services make a vital difference to the lives of thousands of families each year.
Each patient is cared for by our Multi-Disciplinary Care Team and provided with a tailored package of care.
The Hospice believes that every person, to the last moment of their life, has the right to dignity, respect, support and care and work to provide services that add value to life and make a difference to patients and their families.
The Hospice offers a range of services including:
A variety of Inpatient beds providing specialist palliative care for short term, long term and respite care. These services are all delivered by a specialist multi-disciplinary team adopting a holistic approach to care. All rooms come with ensuite facilities and operate 24/7.
Day Hospice - Wednesday
Providing specialist medical help in an outpatient environment to help control symptoms such as pain and sickness and to provide psychological and emotional support to improve wellbeing.
Social Day Care - Tuesday, Thursday & Friday
Enhancing social wellbeing, not just for one day but every day.
Alice House Social Day Care is open to any adult living in Hartlepool or East Durham with life-limiting or terminal illnesses who would benefit from more social activities to enhance their wellbeing.
Our relaxed, friendly social group sessions are a great place for people to socialise with others in an environment which is focussed on choice, empowerment and respect. We offer a range of activities for patients to get involved in which they can continue to enjoy at home, such as:
Arts & Crafts, Games, Themed Days, Exercise, Hen Keeping, Gardening & Allotment Keeping, Reading, music & films, Spiritual and faith based activities, Relaxation techniques
Our social groups are open on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday each week from 9am – 4pm.
Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy
Focussing on a patient’s ability to carry out the everyday tasks which are important and relevant to their health and wellbeing and to remain as independent as possible.
Counselling & Support Services
Providing bereavement and anticipatory grief counselling, our trained staff offer a place to be listened to and respected, while having the time to explore and make sense of your thoughts and feelings. A specialist Children’s Bereavement Service is also offered.
Our highly trained Care Assistants offer support to patients and their families in their own home and the local community to help maintain their independence, support and bring reassurance and prevent isolation.
Therapies designed to offer comfort, emotional support, relaxation and help to relieve symptoms. The therapies are used to complement the specialist medical and nursing care our patients may be receiving.
24 Hour Helpline - 01429 855558
The Hospice’s 24 Hour Helpline is provided by trained staff who can give clinical advice and support or signpost to other professionals if appropriate. The Helpline is available for the public and professionals.

Is there a cost for this service?
The Hospice offers a range of both free and chargeable services. We find that, where services are chargeable, most patients are eligible for Personal Health Budgets or Continuing Health funding.
Office Hours are 8.30am-5pm Monday - Friday
Visiting hours are 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
