Martha's Rule at North Tees
If you care for someone in hospital, you know them better than anyone. You notice the small changes - the subtle signs that something "just isn't right".
Martha's Rule has been introduced in many NHS hospitals, including North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, to make sure your concerns are heard and acted on quickly.
What is Martha's Rule?
Martha's Rule gives patients, families, and carers a clear way to ask for urgent review if they're worried about a person's condition. It was created to ensure that concerns are taken seriously and that additional medical expertise can be brought in without delay.
When should you use it?
You can ask for a review if you notice:
- A sudden change in breathing, behaviour, or alterness
- Increased pain or distress
- A feeling that your loved one is getting worse, even if you can't explain why
- Concerns that haven't been resolved after speaking to staff
Trust your instincts - they matter!
