Credit unions

A credit union is a financial co-operative.  Credit unions are not-for-profit and are owned and controlled by their members. Members pool their savings to offer low-cost loans to other members.

Credit unions can help those who have been refused credit elsewhere or who have had any difficulty trying to open an account with a High Street bank.  Some savers prefer to use credit unions instead of High Street banks as they know their money is being used to help others in their community.  Members of credit unions are given free life insurance.

Hartlepool Credit Union

Hartlepool has its own Credit Union, based in Avenue Road in the town centre.  Hartlepool residents can open an account with Hartlepool Credit Union with just £1.  Members can use their account to save money or apply for a loan.

Credit unions encourage their members to save regularly, even if they are repaying a loan.  You can save as much or as little as you like using convenient local 'collection points' to pay money into your account.

Children can open their own junior saver account with Hartlepool Credit Union.
