Time banking
Time banking is a new way for people to come together to help others in their community - and help themselves at the same time.
Members of a time bank earn time credits by giving practical help and support to others. They deposit their time credits in the time bank and can then 'withdraw' their time when they need something done for themselves.
Time banking in Hartlepool
Connected Care - a local organisation based in Kilmarnock Road - have set up a time bank for residents in the south of the town.
Known as Time Bank South, the time bank treats everyone's time equally. Members earn 1 time credit for every hour that they spend helping someone. They could earn credits by collecting prescriptions, taking someone shopping, helping with decorating - just about anything. Members can then 'spend' their time credits getting help for themselves or donate time credits to other members if they do not need them.
There is no cash involved in Time Bank South and anyone in the area can join: age, ability, finance or limited mobility are not barriers to taking part.
