£25,000 available to local sports groups

Groups and clubs in Hartlepool are being urged to bid for money to fund innovative projects that encourage more people to take part in sport and physical activity.

£25,000 is available through the Community Activities Network (CAN).  The CAN is a partnership of local organisations which leads on the promotion and provision of physical activity and sport in Hartlepool. The money has been provided by the Hartlepool Primary Care Trust (PCT), one of the CAN partners.

The money aims to fund projects which address particular target groups or populations which are under-represented in sport and physical activity.

Daniel Garthwaite from Hartlepool Borough Council's Sport and Recreation Team said: "Projects must demonstrate a need for the activity to take place. The CAN will not fund 'more of the same' if there are already similar activities taking place in the town.

"Funding cannot be used to cover running costs, although it can be used to pay for coaches, venue hire and transport.

"It is also important to stress that this funding is available to anyone in any area - priority is not given to deprived wards.

"Sustainability is also a key element of any application as funding cannot be guaranteed over following years. Therefore, exit routes and on-going contributions will be an important part of bids being successful."
