Story: Healthy eating goes down a treat!
A healthy eating scheme in Hartlepool's Lynnfield area has been praised as one of the most successful in the town.
The Hartlepool Fruit and Veg Bag Scheme - which is supported by Hartlepool Borough Council - gives residents around the town the opportunity to order fruit, vegetables and salad fresh from a local supplier every week for just £2.80 per bag or £10 for a family box. Customers can also pay with Healthy Start Vouchers.
Take-up of the scheme at Lynnfield Sure Start Children's Centre in Elcho Street is now running at over 60 bags per week, having more than doubled over the past year.
The fruit and vegetables are supplied by local fruiterer Garry Torka from his Fruit Boy shop in King Oswy Drive.
Jill McKinley, centre development worker, said: "The healthy eating message really is catching on and over the last year in particular we have seen a big increase in orders from families who use the centre, staff and other neighbouring residents.
"A lot of credit must go to Garry Torka whose fruit and vegetable bags and boxes are second-to-none for freshness and variety.
"It's also the result of the hard work by the Lynnfield Children's Centre team to promote the scheme and encourage people to use it by making them aware of the quality and value for money."
Kim Baines, Hartlepool Borough Council's healthy food co-ordinator, added: "The Hartlepool Fruit and Veg Bag Scheme offers exceptional value for money and plays a vital part in helping people achieve a healthy balanced diet.
"We're delighted that the Lynnfield part of the scheme is doing especially well - they are certainly setting the pace for the other areas to beat!"
