Free dental treatment

Some people are entitled to free dental treatment.  You will not be charged for treatment if you are:

  • on certain benefits
  • pregnant, or a new mum
  • a full-time student aged 18
  • a child aged under 18 years

Families with a low income may qualify for help with their health costs.

If you are not sure whether you are entitled to free NHS dental treatment, call Patient Services at the Prescription Pricing Authority on 0845 850 1166.

Charges for dental treatment

If you do not qualify for free treatment, you will pay one of three prices, depending on which 'band' your treatment is in (prices correct in February 2009).

  • Band 1 - £16.20

Band 1 covers an examination, diagnosis (including x-rays), advice on how to prevent future problems, and a scale and polish if needed.

  • Band 2 - £44.60

This covers everything listed in Band 1, plus any further treatment such as fillings, root canal work, or if your dentist needs to remove one or more teeth.

  • Band 3 - £198.00

This covers everything listed in Band 1 and Band 2, plus crowns, dentures or bridges.
